Japan Day 8: Christmas in Shinjuku

For Christmas morning, Dec. 25, we just wanted to take it slow.

We ate cake in the morning, and then we went to Shinjuku to wait for Robot Restaurant. Somehow, even though it seemed like every single restaurant in Tokyo was booked for Christmas Eve, we were able to get reservations to Robot Restaurant for Christmas Day. It started at 12:30 PM so we went to a sushi place first to eat. We had sushi bowls and it was quite alright, nothing to write home about though. We walked around the red light district and we picked up our tickets, finished our bottles of sake, and went in. We were given 2 souvenir pens.

We waited in the waiting room and it was so kaleidoscopic! When it was time for the show, we went down many flights of stairs. But you need to focus when you walk.

The room you end up in is quite small and intimate.

Then, the show began! Many people bought food trays there, but we just had lunch so we didn’t want it. They told us a bunch of safety rules, and told us in the front row we should be sure to lean back so we don’t get hurt by the robots whizzing by! It was full of dancing, lights, and awesome robots and costumes! It was so amazing and even though I hadn’t moved at all during the show, I felt like I was almost about to be out of breath myself. There were four parts, and each part was different, but equally amazing. It was a lot of fun. It was REALLY RANDOM.

After we left, I followed a crow acting weird walking around on the ground. Then we walked to the Tokyo Metropolitan government building. It took a while, but we were just planning to wander.

So modern!

We went into the building and were directed to take the elevators to get to the observatory level. We waited in line for a bit, and then the security guards checked our bags. They ushered us into the elevator, packing us tight. Then we went up all the way to the top.

At the top, there were windows on each side, a gift shop, and a guy playing piano in the center.

We left and went shopping again, casually. We knew we would have to buy another suitcase for our souvenirs, so we browsed those in some of the department stores. We were able to make our way back into the main area by using the sky bridges.

Then we went to have all you can eat shabu shabu in Shinjuku again. The only catch is, you have to get it done in 75 minutes (instead of the usual 90 or 120). And, you have to finish the first set of meat (3 porks, 2 beefs) before ordering anything else.

I stuffed my face.

Then, after that, we trained to Ebisu to check out the Christmas illuminations to the south. We planned to check out the Ebisu Christmas market and the Meguro city cherry blossoms along the Meguro City riverwalk.
